The Wayne State University Basic Science Research Fellowship is a challenging program designed to prepare individuals of particular promise for a career as Emergency Medicine physician-scientists working in the field of neuronal injury and repair. Candidates will have successfully completed a residency in Emergency Medicine; no prior research experience is required. Fellows work with a faculty member of the Sanderson Laboratory to develop a research project in the field of cerebral ischemia that has a high likelihood of success and maximal impact upon the fellow's career development. The fellow is inducted into an integrated training program, including complete laboratory, career and doctoral curricula, with a view toward securing a Ph.D. in physiology.

Additionally, the fellow is trained in the preparation of successful grant proposals and manuscripts. The fellow has significant protected time and discharges his or her clinical duties as an attending physician in one of the Emergency Departments staffed by our practice group.

This combination of bench experience, didactic program, aggressive mentoring and career training, enhanced by an extraordinary laboratory and teaching environment, has already produced several successful physician-scientists.
