Bigger and Better

The 2019 match made history here at Sinai Grace! A jump from 12 residents per year to 16 has been an exciting change to our program as we grow the emergency medicine resident family coming out of Detroit. We had a blast getting to know these new interns through the July orientation block ending with our resident retreat at Camp Tamarack. Now that orientation is behind them, we can't wait to see how these mature and motivated new doctors push our program forward over the next three years. Last but not least, we are also excited to welcome a new PGY-2 who will be transferring over from the Hahnemann/Drexel program in the city of brotherly love. He will be joining us in mid-September!

As we all know, with more power (in numbers), comes more responsibility. Starting this academic year, we have updated our grand rounds structure and now utilize the Foundations of Emergency Medicine (FoEM) curriculum. FoEM integrates the core textbook knowledge with primary literature and extensively vetted free open-access medical education. This systems-based, case-based curriculum is designed for small group discussion by PGY level covering common emergencies such as the approach to pulmonary embolisms and the undifferentiated rash to advanced practice topics like the physiologically unstable intubation and refractory arrhythmias. So far, it has been a great transformation and well received by the residents and faculty. The support and mentoring from the SGH attendings during our breakout sessions has also been invaluable.

As we continue to improve our educational excellence, we take pride in being a program focused on resident wellness, not simply in theory but in action. We host "Mandatory Fun Events" or MFEs monthly, and this past month we found ourselves racing with each other and our attendings in the midst of the smell of burning gasoline on 40mph Go-Karts in Sterling Heights. Helmets, seatbelts, safety, and speed of course (we also work in small educational breakout sessions)! In September, we will be doing a bike tour of Bell Isle.

It is quite remarkable how fast residency goes by.  We just welcomed the class of 2022 and we see growing confidence in the second year class running their own medical and trauma resuscitations. Now as third years, not only are we leaders in the emergency department, but many have secured fellowship and attending positions throughout the country as we expand the Sinai-Grace family.
