Edward S. Thomas achieved great things by doing the right thing well. The Edward S. Thomas Memorial Golf Outing celebrates his legacy. He was a friend, a mentor, a colleague and an inspiration to the many who worked with him. This event is not only a tribute to this great man, it is also a benefit for the Edward S. Thomas Section of Community and Public Health at Wayne State University School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine. The physicians who lead this section wish to make a difference in the way that Emergency Medicine interacts with the community. WSU Emergency Medicine graduates practice in health systems throughout Michigan and around the world.

2021 Program Accomplishments:

  • In partnership with the Wayne Health Mobile Unit, over 18,000 COVID-19 tests were performed in 2021.
  • The Wayne Health Mobile Unit was one of the first non-hospital entities to receive vaccines to administer. In 2021, over 14,000 vaccines were administered.
  • Under Dr. Phillip Levy's leadership, WSU has received two funding awards from the American Heart Association and National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities that both look to address hypertension in the community with a focus on growing the community health workforce.
  • Started a Mobile Lead Testing Program in partnership with the Wayne Health Mobile Unit, which has been deployed to Benton Harbor, MI in response to the water crisis.
  • Started a Sterile Syringe Program in partnership with the Wayne Health Mobile Unit and Team Wellness Center, where we are providing clean harm reduction supplies, rapid HIV and Hepatitis C testing, and linkage to substance use treatment.
  • Provided over 50 blood pressure cuffs to community members to assist with their hypertension management.
  • Have utilized PHOENIX (Population Health OutcomEs aNd Information Exchange) tool to deploy the Wayne Health Mobile Units.
  • Hosted focus groups with community members and community health workers as part of Bring It Down, a chronic disease management initiative, to understand what resources are needed to help address social determinants of health.

The proceeds of this event will be geared to continue this work in the community.
