New Faculty Spotlight: David Carroll, M.D.
David Carroll, MD was born in Sligo, Ireland and grew up in Needham, Massachusetts after his family relocated in 2001. He completed a BA in Sociology with a minor in Middle Eastern Studies at Elon University and then pursued post-baccalaureate studies and medical school at St. George’s University School of Medicine, where he graduated magna cum laude in 2019. Dr. Carroll subsequently completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Ascension Genesys Hospital—serving as Resident Clerkship Director and earning “Resident of the Year”—and then a Medical Toxicology fellowship at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center. He currently practices at Detroit Medical Center as an emergency medicine physician and a medical toxicologist and serves as Assistant Director of Education for the Michigan Poison and Drug Information Center. He is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and is an active member of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American College of Medical Toxicology.
Dr. Carroll’s scholarly interests span medical toxicology, addiction medicine and critical care. He is involved in several ongoing studies, including imaging microglial density in opioid use disorder, optimizing inpatient buprenorphine induction, anticonvulsant prophylaxis in patients with bupropion toxicity and the utilization of arginine as an insulin secretagogue in DKA under the mentorship of Dr. Jeff Kline who has been instrumental in honing Dr. Carroll’s research interests and career goals. Outside of the hospital, David enjoys a busy family life with his wife Julia (whom he met at Elon University), their two children, Nora (2) and Owen (7 months)—and their cat, Aoife. He is an avid runner and Brazilian jiu‑jitsu enthusiast and appreciates the balance these activities bring to his professional life.
